An SCCA undefeated Jaguar D Type, sold to a 17 year old high school student who took it to Bonneville, and went 185 mph, it's the fastest D Type ever at B-ville



Supplied to Hoffman, USA, XKD 529 had a 2nd owner in the Briggs Cunningham race team, who, with Walt Hansgen driving, won SCCA C-Modified Championships in 1956 and 1957. It was then sold to Thomas Rutherford (Massachusetts) who went with a long legged 2.53 axle, disc-type wheels and exhaust exiting at rear, took it to Bonneville where car achieved speed of 185.47mph, the highest officially recorded by a D-type. A record that held for 55 years.


It didn't do much after that, except survive a tornado, and the Firestones from 1960 are still on it.

It sold for 1,815,000 at 2005 Monterey http://blog.supercars.net/blog/1954-jaguar-d-type/ when the Walter Hill Jaguar collection was auctioned off, where it had been sharing a garage with 2 or the 16 XK-SS

 It did go to the Oakland Roadster Show, I read somewhere, but can't find jack on the internet about 1959-62 ORS participants to verify that

  1. The official speed record ......However my impression is that the '55 long nose went even faster and Norman Dewis at the '55 Le mans estimated the D did 192mph at Le mans in 1955

    1. SO, you didn't carefully read the way I wrote this, with specific words that were used in a way that was chosen so that notes like yours would not be worth the time they take to write.
      Let me repeat the key phrase, the fastest D Type ever at B-ville.
      Do you see now why what you wrote to me has zero relevance to this article?
      Because I'm not going to try and write an encyclopedia of all car records for all cars, at all venues.
      If something was faster at LeMans, well, goody for it.
      This article was about the speed at Bonneville, which happens to be a place where records are set, kept, and put into the history books.
      I haven't learned a lot about LeMans, as it's on another continent, and very very far away from where I am. Bonneville though, is close, and I've been there.
      but though I'm quite uneducated on LeMans, I haven't heard that they have a measured mile speed record area set up with clocks, lights, recording the speed of cars through any particular area.
      If they did, I expect people would try to set speed records there for the same reason that people go to Bonneville.
      Instead, I am pretty sure that speeds are recorded as to the time it takes to go from the start to the finish line, and again, I don't know much about LeMans.
      So, not only do I not write articles and research the various other places that speeds are noted, like LeMans and other race tracks, they do not get land speed records issued at LeMans, so, I don't bother with it.
      I do know that Bonneville is where people find out how fast, very very accurately, and that's why British cars have been coming to Bonneville for about a 100 years... must be a France thing about not seeing how fast cars can go on the LeMans track
      Also, we don't "estimate" when comparing cars high speeds, not without looking quite foolish. We also don't put much stock in "impressions"
      Maybe, you aren't into land speed racing, but estimates and impressions are fine for you, but not when discussing serious land speed records.
      I actually don't know why you wasted your time telling me about estimates and impressions.
      I don't give a damn about estimates and impressions when discussing land speed records.
      I like to have repairs estimated, and I like to hear about impressions when discussing how cars look.
      Maybe, you thought you were writing to someone else about something else and got the website wrong.

    1. then you do not understand what a challenge is. It clearly was one, a contradictory statement that attempts to refute the facts presented, and historically correct, proven in the record books.
      Instead of challenging me on the facts I've presented, learn to read, and quit poking the bear.
      I haven't claimed to not be pompous and arrogant. I do happen to be correct, so why not respect the facts and learn to read? That would prevent you from saying stupid things.

  3. This Jag sat in a Cathedral City, CA car dealership for months in 1962-63. Couldn't afford the asking price of $5500 on my box boy salary at the Palm Springs Market Basket, so I bought a 1955 Austin Healey 100/4 for $650 instead. Nice first car, but was not reliable... pb
